Executive Connection with Rip Mason, CEO of LegalShield
In this month’s Executive Connection, Direct Selling News Publisher and Editor in Chief John Fleming speaks with Rip Mason, CEO of LegalShield, about leadership, branding and setting high expectations for oneself.
DSN: What is the one thing you enjoy most about being the CEO of LegalShield?
RM: The time I get to spend with our field leadership around the country.
DSN: What has been your proudest accomplishment so far?
RM: The creation of our new branding. We’re very proud of that. Hats off to Alan Fearnley and our creative team. They executed it beautifully.
DSN: What do you tell LegalShield’s sales associates to lead and inspire them?
RM: We share our vision for the future. Most importantly, I share the fact that they’re doing something extraordinary by offering this product. It’s something very precious, unique and distinguished that they can be proud of when they go to work every day.
DSN: What is your vision for LegalShield?
RM: To extend and expand the brand awareness significantly. That leads to recruitment and training of associates and vast numbers of new memberships that provide the safety net and peace of mind our products and services offer.
DSN: Before LegalShield, you were an executive with another direct seller. What similarities do you see between their consultants and LegalShield’s associates?
RM: Both companies are blessed with terrific leaders, and both are very stable and profitable companies.
DSN: How would you describe the ideal LegalShield associate?
RM: Someone who understands and appreciates the value of the service; someone who is a member and has used the service and had a terrific experience; someone who, as a result, has a passion for what we provide and in turn has a knowledge of how it is used on a day-to-day basis and can instill that passion in others and recruit them to the company.
DSN: Is there one basic principle which governs your leadership at LegalShield?
RM: There is an honesty and integrity in helping everyone, irrespective of their lineage, down line or affiliation. This is very ecumenical leadership. They support everyone.
DSN: What do you see as our industry’s greatest challenge?
RM: We still carry over the vestiges, particularly in the MLM space, that carry a negative connotation. That’s unfair, and it’s a challenge that continues to need to be addressed. It means we all must conduct ourselves with great integrity at all times.
DSN: What’s one piece of advice that you’ve found especially useful?
RM: High expectancies lead to high results. In this economy there are a lot of challenges, so you have to work hard, but you also have to be sure goals are set high. You get what you seek.
DSN: What do you like to do when you just want to relax?
RM: I like to ski and spend time with my kids. I ride motorcycles. I also like to read, and I like sports.
