Executive Connection with Wally Neeson, Director of Distributor Relations, It Works! Global

Wally NeesonIn this month’s Executive Connection, Direct Selling News Publisher and Editor in Chief John Fleming speaks with Wally Neeson, Director of Distributor Relations at It Works! Global, about leadership, connecting with people and the passion found in direct selling.

DSN: What is the one thing you enjoy most about being the Director of Distributor Relations at It Works!

WN: That’s an easy question. I get the privilege of working with people day in and day out that are seeing their lives changed through the company’s products and opportunity. It’s amazing how many lives are being impacted by our products—not just physically, but also emotionally. People are confident in life and feel better about what they’re doing. It’s very gratifying. So many people have become not just distributors or acquaintances—they’re friends.

DSN: What has been your proudest accomplishment?

WN: I’ve been with It Works! since 2005. Everything we do is based on a team philosophy. [Founder and CEO] Mark [Pentecost] is a former coach, and he has put together a strong team. I’m proud of us as a team. Every leader has a passion for It Works! That approach can create a lot of success, and that’s what we’re seeing right now.

DSN: What do you tell It Works! distributors to lead and inspire them?

WN: One of the things I always say with our system is that we want to keep it simple. Anybody can do this. We have the Ultimate Body Applicator. It doesn’t deliver results in 90 days or 60 days. It’s instant gratification. When people see results, they’ll be excited.

DSN: What is your vision for It Works?

WN: Maintaining what we’ve implemented. The It Works! way is our culture, our people. It’s one of the best things about It Works! We have field leadership and a corporate team that have been here from the beginning. That’s unique and significant.

DSN: What’s your favorite regular task or activity at It Works!—maybe something you do every day or every week?

WN: I’m a people person, so I love being able to talk with our people, congratulate them on promotions, and hear their stories. I make phone calls to people who have recently been promoted, and just hearing their background and their success since joining is heart tugging and exciting for me. What they do for me and our team as a whole—those things are plastered all over the corporate offices. That’s what’s special about this industry as a whole.

DSN: What’s been the most fun part of the rapid growth at It Works?

WN: Watching our leaders develop over time. I’ve been able to see that progression—of them really becoming the leaders they are today and seeing their lives change, and I’ve developed relationships with them. It’s fun to get together and discuss the changes and things that have been accomplished over that time.

DSN: What advice would you give an executive at a young direct selling company to help them achieve rapid growth?

WN: Be yourself. Your passion and knowledge is what got you where you are today and it will take you to the next level, but also continue to learn from those around you. I also think it’s important to stay true to your core competencies.

DSN: Is there one basic principle which governs your leadership at It Works?

WN: We have such a diverse background in our leaders, but the biggest consistency is having a heart for people. So many of our leaders can’t wait to get others involved and help them to be successful. I think that’s what drives a lot of what we do.

DSN: What’s one piece of advice that you’ve found especially useful?

WN: Don’t try to reinvent the wheel. We focus on keeping it simple. Staying true to that will create success and give you opportunities.

DSN: What do you like to do when you just want to relax?

WN: Golf is always good, and I enjoy relaxing on the beach. But being with family and friends is hands down the best.
