Industry Supports Relief Efforts in the Philippines
Following November’s Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest storms in recorded history, several direct selling companies have announced donations in support of relief and recovery efforts in the Philippines. Though additional companies have not yet released details, many are mobilizing their sales consultants and resources to offer aid. Helping others is one of the finest aspects of our industry, and one that makes us very proud to be a part of it.
Amway has provided an initial donation of $100,000 in immediate cash and product. The company, its business owners and employees will provide the support in partnership with local non-government organizations (NGOs) and relief agencies, especially those which focus on children, in alignment with the AMWAY ONE BY ONE® Campaign for Children.
The Nu Skin Force for Good Foundation has made a $50,000 donation to help with the immediate needs of those affected by this natural disaster. The foundation is also accepting online donations to be used in long-term recovery efforts. The company will continue to support the relief work based on specific needs in the affected area.
The USANA True Health Foundation has donated $20,000 to International Relief Teams (IRT), a nonprofit international humanitarian organization, to aid typhoon victims. The money will provide, among other things, immediate survival essentials such as clean water, water purification tablets and food. USANA’s Independent Distributor Council in the Philippines will also hold a 5,000-participant Fun Run on Jan. 19, 2014, to raise money for the foundation in an effort to help others in need.
DSA Honors Top 20 Members
The Direct Selling Association recently announced its top 20 member companies based on membership dues paid to the association in 2012. The list and description of companies was provided in alphabetical order.
Representing the broad range of products and services available via direct selling, the 20 companies named to this year’s list demonstrate the positive impact direct selling has on the economy, communities and the millions of Americans who participate in the industry.
DSA is the national trade association of the leading firms that manufacture and distribute goods and services sold directly to consumers. Among its more than 240 active and pending members are companies selling both via a party-plan method and in the traditional person-to-person style. Direct Sellers Receive 2013 Hire Power Awards
Vivint™, Origami Owl® and It Works! Global® were recently honored among other nationally renowned companies in the 2013 Inc. Hire Power Awards. The award recognizes private companies that are leading the way in creating jobs and supporting the country’s economic vitality. Together, the top 100 recipients have created more than 51,000 jobs in 18 months.
Vivint, the largest home automation services company in North America, ranks No. 2 on the list. Inc. also named Vivint the No. 1 job-creating company in Consumer Products and Services and the No. 1 job creator in Utah. Vivint expanded its workforce and corporate offices in 2013, ramping up its staff by 40 percent with nearly 2,000 additional employees.
Origami Owl, a social selling brand best known for its unique line of customizable jewelry, ranks No. 35 among the top companies and No. 2 both in the state of Arizona and in the Consumer Products and Services category. The company has added 341 jobs since its inception in 2010, totaling almost 7,000 percent growth in its employee base.
Origami Owl’s Independent Designer team has grown to more than 50,000 across the U.S. In 2012, the company generated more than $24 million in revenue—up 8,507 percent from 2011. This year, Origami Owl is on track to grow approximately 10 times its 2012 figure. The company employs nearly 400 people at its Chandler, Ariz., headquarters.
Inc. ranked Florida-based It Works! Global the No. 19 job creator in the Consumer Products and Services category. Nu Skin Honored for Growth and Innovation
Nu Skin Enterprises recently received several prestigious awards recognizing the company’s business performance, management team and product innovation. The recent accolades come from the Golden Bridge Awards and the Consumer World Awards.
The Golden Bridge Awards named Nu Skin the Best Overall Company of the Year, an honor based upon Nu Skin’s business performance and overall growth. The Golden Bridge Awards are an annual industry and peers recognition program honoring best companies of all types and sizes across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America.
Additionally, Nu Skin’s executive management team was named Management Team of the Year by the Consumer World Awards. JAFRA Partners with Beauty Bus Foundation
JAFRA Cosmetics International Inc. recently announced a three-year partnership with Beauty Bus Foundation, a national nonprofit organization providing free beauty and grooming services and pampering products to terminally or chronically ill people and their caregivers. JAFRA will donate 100 percent of net proceeds from the sale of its new BeCause line and provide C.A.R.E. Packages (C.A.R.E. = Caring, Appreciated, Remarkable, Exquisite) filled with JAFRA products to caregivers nationally.
JAFRA’s goal is to shed light on the passion, dedication and commitment displayed by these individuals, along with the issues and obstacles they face. Twenty-nine percent of U.S. adults are caregivers, representing the largest source of long-term care services in the country.
JAFRA Independent Consultants recently built thousands of C.A.R.E. Packages filled with JAFRA products, which were given to caregivers around the country during National Caregivers Month in November, through various nonprofits who work with Beauty Bus Foundation.

Herbalife Teams with Brazil’s Science without Borders
Global nutrition company Herbalife recently announced a partnership with the Brazilian government’s “Science without Borders” program, which will co-fund Ph.D.-level student exchanges in the fields of biology, biomedical sciences and health, biotechnology, nutrition, food science and engineering.
The program is a joint initiative promoted by the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Innovation and Technology (MCTI) and the Ministry of Education (MEC) through their supporting organizations, including the National Board for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and the Coordination for Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), the main funding agencies in Brazil.
The agreement will co-fund one of the program’s students in Brazil to conduct part of their Ph.D. work at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), where they will study under the guidance of faculty in the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition.
In 2010, as part of its commitment to furthering knowledge and understanding of nutrition science, the company launched the Herbalife Nutrition Institute (www. herbalifenutritioninstitute.com), an online resource for nutrition information.

Organo Gold Launches in Kenya

Based in London, Paul Jarvis serves as Regional Vice President EU, FSU, Africa and will manage the company’s activities in the country.

Ambit Expands into Rhode Island, Delaware
Ambit Energy, a retail energy provider of electricity and natural gas in deregulated states across the country, recently announced its expansion into Delaware and Rhode Island, as well as the expansion of its natural gas services into PECO territory for Pennsylvania residents. The company began accepting customer enrollments in those markets on Oct. 30, 2013.
Adding new markets in Delaware, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania allows Ambit Energy to expand its service offering to nearly 1.5 million potential new customers. The company has expanded into 11 new markets in 2013, bringing it into a total of 11 states across America.
Based in Dallas, Ambit Energy provides electricity and natural gas services in deregulated markets across the United States, primarily marketed through a direct sales channel of more than 150,000 independent consultants.
